Designed with Penoyre & Prasad the new Science block at Stratton Upper School provides integrated spaces that create the highest quality learning and teaching environments.
The structural frame for the new building is an independent structure which allows for differential movement where it interfaces with the existing buildings. The frame has been constructed with RC columns and walls up to first floor and with steel columns from first to roof level. The floor is formed from an RC slab of Airdeck pre-cast soffit panel with void formers to reduce the slab self-weight. The roof consists of engineered timber I joists supported on steel beams spanning between the steel columns.
Airdeck was chosen as it provided the high quality exposed concrete and exposed thermal mass required, as well as:
- providing greater acoustic separation between floors.
- providing a flat slab solution for services
- reducing the weight of slabs by 30% - reducing the foundations on the poor ground conditions.
- quicker and cleaner construction method as offsite fabrication
Stratton Upper School was completed in 2017 and is the first completed building with Airdeck in the UK.
