The Open University wanted a landmark building, defined as something that could have a strong campus identity and is recognised for the research and work that is carried on inside, but avoiding an iconic tag.
Home to the faculties of maths and computing and the Institute of Educational Technology, it is named after the former Labour Minister for the Arts who turned the enthusiasm of Michael Young and Harold Wilson's Government for an open university into a reality.
