Situated between the new and old cities, the building successfully finds its place as a modern architectural work. Locally quarried stone gives the impression of a modern museum built up from the roots of the old city.
This project is significant from a structural engineering perspective because of the use of exposed self-compacting concrete. This was the first major use of self-compacting concrete in the UK and allowed the Architect to experiment with detailed imprinted finishes and complex shapes. The project won the Overall Award from the Concrete Society in 2006.
