Client: Samsung Construction / Donaldson Associates
Value: Access Shafts Contract £50m
Status: Completed 2013
Engineering Disciplines: Civil, Structural, Geotechnical
Water is a precious resource in the Middle East and making best use of it can require major civil engineering works, including tunnelling. Our experience of working with top quality Geotechnical engineers on projects in London and internationally has led to our appointment by Donaldson Associates for the detailed structural analysis and design of deep tunnel access and workshafts for a Middle East water treatment scheme.
The 9 shafts vary in diameter from 7 to 17 metres and are up to 35 metres deep. Detailed 3D finite element modelling of the structure has been undertaken to assess the impact of the construction sequence, including the cutting of tunnel 'eyes' in the diaphragm wall by the tunnel boring machine (TBM). The tunnel 'eye' design utilises GFRP reinforcement to prevent damage to the TBM.
Euro Norms have been used for the project to ensure that the design incorporates not only the latest structural, but also geotechnical and seismic requirements.
