As part of our continued involvement in the Birmingham Primary Places programme, Nansen School is a 3100m2 extension to an existing school providing new nursery, multi-use hall and classroom accommodation.
Engenuiti worked in partnership with main contractor Wates and specialist timber sub-contractor B&K Structures to deliver a cross-laminated timber (CLT) frame within the constraints of a tight programme and a live school environment.
In addition to its carbon capture properties CLT reduces the weight of the construction with consequent benefits on foundation design and material deliveries to site; providing an 'air tight' structural solution that was fast to erect; offered improved thermal performance compared to conventional structures; and was prefabricated to incorporate all service penetrations, thus minimising noise and disruption to neighbours.
