GRANGE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Client: B & K Structures / London Borough of Southwark

Architect: MaccreanorLavington

Status: Complete

Engineering Disciplines: Advanced timber engineering

MaccreanorLavington Architects was appointed by London Borough of Southwark to refurbish and expand Grange Primary School, as part of their programme to increase primary school places. The redevelopment will increase the school from 1.5 forms of entry to 2 forms.

A complete masterplan for the school was developed which included the refurbishment of the existing building to provide enhanced teaching flexibility and a new build cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure which creates an entire new street front, enhancing community presence and housing a new hall and kitchen, a nursery and an administration hub.

The new hall delivers enhanced dining facilities and space for whole school assemblies. It benefits from views out to mature trees and has easy access for out of hours and community use. The nursery has been co-located with reception classrooms to create an Early Years and Foundation Stage Hub, with a dedicated playground provided in place of a former car park. The new administration building contains offices and the re-housed library which also acts as a family room to support work with children’s families and carers.

Working with B&K Structures, Engenuiti provided advanced timber engineering services to support the successful delivery of the new build structural timber element of the project.
